One day I was chattin' with our Iowan Scooby, Casper, and I mentioned to her how I'd always been super-fascinated with something I'd heard about up in Iowa, something called the 'Black Angel'- an urban-legendary cemetery monument that was said to bring death, sickness and other misfortune to anyone foolish enough to touch it. As soon as I mentioned it, she was on the case- not only did she know just where it was, she went and got me these shots that very same day! And what amazing, spooky shots they are. Below, Casper tells us more about her photos, and her visit to the infamous Black Angel...

"The black angel is very well known to just about anyone. Located in Iowa City, Iowa at the address of 1000 Brown St, in Oakland Cemetery. She is known for causing death or an illness to anyone who touches her.


If a pregnant woman was to walk beneath her stretched wing they would miscarry. But only a virgin can survive the touching of the Black Angel. She was erected as a moment by the Feldevert family, I think the wife for her son and husband. She was white but soon turned black and is said to become blacker after each Halloween.

I ventured over there on the 4th of July, for Shady, and it was a cloudy and rainy day. I'm surprised the pictures turned out so well. The letterbox was there, filled with the notebook and stamp if anyone is interested. You do need to provide your own pen though! I was able to get pictures of every angle of the Black Angel and even got an excellent close up of her face.

Now the stump looking thing next to the monument, I was told by my friend I took with me that, that stump held the first Angel, but was knocked down and replaced with what you see today. Who knows. There was no one around to really ask. If you are in the Iowa City area I definitely recommend stopping by and seeing her. Maybe try going on Halloween when it's supposed to be really spooky!
